The Hauge Institue is a foundation, i.e. an independent institution founded in Norwegian law. Based on the thinking and practice of Hans Nielsen Hauge, the Hauge Institute will focus on the ethical dimension in three main areas: Leadership, Entrepeneurship, and Trade and the Environment.

The first vision of the Hauge Institute was introduced to the Hauge Committee in Telemark in 2003. The aim was to develop a National Competence Centre which would be the caretaker of the heritage of the entrepreneur and business leader Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771-1824). The poor farmer’s son from Østfold is today recognised as one of the most influential business leaders and community builders in Norwegian history. It is Hauge’s contribution to entrepreneurship, education, network building and creative social responsibility which has deservedly given him this position.

The Hauge Institute will focus on and convey Hauge's ethical foundation for work, business and society. Hauge showed this through his thinking and his practice in areas such as leadership and communications, entrepeneurship and economic development, and in his responsibility for society at large.

The target groups are leaders at all levels in business and administration as well as youth under education. Based on Hans Nielsen Hauge's thought and his example, we also wish to inspire poor people in developing countries and in other unfavorable regions to develop their own businesses by means of micro credit.
